  16. readers; in Par, Cornwall, England. The gothic imagery and
  17. polished storytelling of Du Maurier's 24 books were often
  18. perfect fodder for a plot-hungry Hollywood. Among her works made
  19. into films: Jamaica Inn (1939), Rebecca (1940) and The Birds
  20. (1963), all directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
